Perseus expands Dark Matter with new servicing tech partner

Perseus Operating Group, a unit of Constellation Software, is expanding Dark Matter Technologies beyond origination functions by making Mortgage Builder's former CMS Servicing software part of DM's offerings.

Dark Matter is a rebranding of the Empower origination software that Black Knight sold to Constellation, so its pairing with servicing technology is a familiar position for the company.

The move, which was announced as the Mortgage Bankers Association servicing conference got underway on Tuesday, is in line with an earlier transition Dark Matter made to add a Mortgage Builder loan origination system to its lineup.

The enterprise-level cloud-based servicing platform integrates with that LOS, Nova, and will soon also be connected to Empower.

"Adding a servicing platform fulfills a critical need for many of our clients," said Sean Dugan incoming CEO of Dark Matter, in a press release. (Dugan will officially take the position in April when current CEO Rich Gagliano transitions to the executive chairman role.)

The servicing system offers payment processing and cashiering, escrow management, investor reporting, default management and a white-label self-service consumer portal. It also handles interim servicing ahead of transfers and printing of disclosures and account statements.

Black Knight, which had been the largest player in servicing automation, helped create Dark Matter when it sold Empower to reduce the consolidation of origination technology when Intercontinental Exchange bought BK. Black Knight is now part of ICE Mortgage Technology.

Constellation acquired Mortgage Builder in 2019 from Altisource Portfolio Solutions. Altisource purchased Mortgage Builder in 2014. Mortgage Builder originally had ties to a servicing technology provider called GCC Servicing Systems.
