The Mortgage Bankers Association's Opens Doors Foundation has raised more than $59,000 as a charity partner of the New York City Marathon.
The foundation will send 15 runners, who have collectively raised $59,300, to participate in the marathon. All of the proceeds will go toward the foundation's work assisting families in need.
The Opens Doors Foundation works to assist individuals and families in dealing with housing challenges that result from having to pay for the care of a seriously ill child. Currently, the foundation has relationships with children's hospitals in Washington, D.C., Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Denver and Houston.
The MBA announced in March that its foundation would be an official charity partner of the marathon. The marathon has three levels of charity partnership: silver, bronze and community. Based on their level, charities must commit more runners and funds raised per runner.
The MBA's Opens Doors Foundation is a community partner, which according to the marathon's website commits it to five to 10 entries in the marathon, with each runner raising at least $2,500. Charity partners can set higher fundraising minimums.
The New York City Marathon goes through all five of the city's boroughs and finishes in Central Park. The marathon is broadcast on ESPN2, and runners can be tracked using the marathon's app.
