Cornerstone launches effort to expand homeownership access

Cornerstone Capital Bank is opening a Community Lending Division, which has a mission to create homeownership opportunities for underserved groups and aims to help 1,000 families purchase homes in its first year.

This division is headed up by Jessie Jackson and Rod See, senior vice presidents and co-managing directors and it will be based out of Arlington, Texas, operating in 45 states and the District of Columbia.

It had been a non-bank lender until 2022, when the Houston-based mortgage banking unit Cornerstone Home Lending acquired Roscoe (Texas) State Bank.

"This initiative reflects Cornerstone's commitment to creating solutions that make a lasting difference," said Adam Laird, CEO-mortgage banking at Cornerstone Capital Bank, in a press release. "By expanding access to housing, we are fulfilling our mission of building stronger communities through exceptional service and personal engagement."

The bank pointed to the disparity in homeownership rates among non-Hispanic whites (73.8%) compared with Asian Americans (63%); Hispanic Americans (49.8%) and Blacks at 45.9%.

"These numbers highlight the urgency of our mission," said Mark Dinkins, regional senior vice president of Cornerstone Home Lending. "By addressing the barriers that have historically limited access to homeownership, we aim to create meaningful opportunities for families in every community we serve."

The new unit will be partnering with organizations like the National Association of Real Estate Brokers, the National Association of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals, and others. It will participate in state and local down payment assistance funds along with Federal Home Loan Bank grant programs.

"I joined Cornerstone because the company's mission and values align perfectly with my passion for helping families achieve the dream of homeownership," said See. "For originators, agents, and builders who want to make a meaningful difference, the Community Lending Division offers the resources to succeed and the opportunity to serve a diverse range of clients — not just low-income borrowers, but anyone seeking a path to homeownership."

MortgageStats data listed Cornerstone Capital as the 10th largest bank mortgage lender in the U.S. in the third quarter, at $3.26 billion. In April 2023, the bank started a subservicing business.

"At Cornerstone, we believe homeownership is transformative. It builds stronger families and communities," said Jackson. "We are thrilled to make homeownership more accessible through innovative programs and personalized support."
