Brian Montgomery, former HUD No. 2, rejoins Radian's board

Brian Montgomery, the former No. 2 official at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, has returned as a director of The Radian Group.

He became a director again on June 7 when Radian's board voted to expand the membership by one and named him to the seat.

Between 2012 and 2017, before a second go-round as Federal Housing Commissioner — where he oversaw Radian's government-run competitor — Montgomery served on the private mortgage insurer's board.

"Brian's tremendous expertise and acumen were of great value at the HUD, and the same will be true as he returns to Radian's board," Radian Chairman Herb Wender said in a press release.

After serving as a deputy assistant to former President George W. Bush, Montgomery was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Federal Housing Commissioner in June 2005, a job he held for four years, including the first six months of the Obama administration.

Later in 2009, Montgomery and former Ginnie Mae President Joe Murin founded a consulting firm, the Collingswood Group. Then in May 2012, Montgomery was elected by Radian stockholders to the company's board.

He remained with Collingswood following its purchase by what is now called SitusAMC in 2017. Later that year he was nominated by President Trump to reassume the top job at FHA, but the Senate did not confirm Montgomery until May 2018 as some Democrats objected to his ties with the mortgage industry when he was at Collingswood.

After he was nominated, Montgomery left Collingswood and the Radian board.

In October 2019, after serving as acting HUD deputy secretary since Pam Patenaude's resignation that January, then-President Donald Trump formally nominated Montgomery to that post, but he was not confirmed until May 2020. He resigned on Jan. 20, 2021, as President Joe Biden was inaugurated.
