Real estate prices and rents have increased in recent years, as the supply of housing has dropped. Some cities are investing in building new homes, while others are not.

The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos, Texas, area added 37 new housing units authorized per 1,000 existing homes in 2023. The Buffalo-Cheektowaga, New York, area only added 2.3 new housing units authorized per 1,000 existing homes in 2023.
