Consumer Confidence Down in October: Fannie Mae

Mixed views of the economy drove consumers' overall trust in the housing market down in October, according to Fannie Mae's Home Purchase Sentiment Index.

The index, a compendium of six questions Fannie Mae presents to consumers in a monthly survey, dropped 0.6% to 83.2 last month, after a near-peak level showing in September.

Though less consumers were convinced of an impending mortgage rate increase, less found it a good time to buy a house and a smaller proportion reported an upswing in income.

Notably, 41% of consumers surveyed said they considered it was a bad time to sell a house — a five-point increase from September.

The HPSI draws data from the National Housing Survey, which questioned about a thousand consumers.
